No, you can't overcharge a modern laptop. But keeping it full and hot does age the battery. Here's how to stay plugged in without the cost.

No, it is not bad in the way most people fear. A modern laptop cannot be overcharged: a built-in charge controller stops feeding the battery at 100% and runs the machine off the wall adapter, so leaving it plugged in does not overfill or damage the cell.
The real cost is subtler. Lithium-ion batteries age a little faster when they spend long stretches at a full 100% charge, and they age much faster when they get hot. A laptop that is always plugged in, always topped up, and warm from heavy use will gradually lose more capacity than one kept cooler and cycled in the middle of its range.
The fix is easy. If your laptop mostly stays on your desk, turn on the manufacturer's charge limit (commonly 80%) through Windows Smart charging, the Surface app, Lenovo Vantage, Dell Power Manager, or macOS Optimized Battery Charging. Keep the vents clear and the machine on a hard surface, and unplug every week or two to let the battery drift down before topping up.
Do that and staying plugged in is perfectly safe. You will simply be managing charge level and heat, which are the two factors that actually decide how long the battery lasts.
