Slow Windows 11 PC? Trim startup apps, free disk space, update drivers, scan for malware, and learn when a RAM or SSD upgrade is worth it.

A Windows 11 PC rarely slows down for a single reason. The usual culprits are too many startup apps, a nearly full system drive, outdated drivers, hidden malware, or simply aging hardware. Before you spend money on a new machine, work through the free fixes below in order — most slowdowns disappear in under half an hour.
Start with a restart: a clean reboot clears stuck processes and is the fastest fix of all. Then open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and check the Performance and Processes tabs. Sort by CPU, then Memory, then Disk to see what is actually loading your machine.
Many programs add themselves to startup and quietly run in the background, slowing every login. In Task Manager open the Startup apps tab, check the Startup impact column, and disable anything you do not need the moment you sign in.
Windows 11 slows noticeably once the system drive drops below roughly 10% free. Go to Settings > System > Storage, switch on Storage Sense, and run Cleanup recommendations to clear temporary files, the Recycle Bin, and old Windows Update data.
Updates ship real performance fixes alongside security patches. Open Settings > Windows Update, install everything, then check Advanced options > Optional updates for driver updates. For graphics, download the latest driver directly from Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA rather than waiting on Windows.
While you are in Settings, open System > Power and set Power mode to Best performance so Windows stops throttling the CPU to save energy. On a laptop, do this while plugged in.
Hidden malware and cryptominers can quietly consume your CPU and ruin performance. Run a full scan with Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, and run a free second-opinion scanner if the machine still feels slow.
If the software steps only help a little, the hardware is the bottleneck. Two inexpensive upgrades can transform an old PC:

An SSD is the single most effective upgrade for any PC still running a mechanical drive, and most laptops let you add RAM in just a few minutes.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then open the Performance and Processes tabs. Sort the process list by CPU, Memory, and Disk in turn to find what is using the most resources.
Note whether CPU, memory, or disk is maxed out — that tells you which fix below will help the most.
