The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite is the most refined version of Amazon's most popular e-reader. The jump to a 7-inch 300 ppi display gives you more text per page without making the device feel bulky, and the genuinely faster page turns finally close the gap that made the old Paperwhite feel sluggish. Add a warm front light, IPX8 waterproofing, USB-C and weeks of battery, and you have an e-reader that does the fundamentals better than almost anything else. The only real friction is Amazon's walled garden — sideloading EPUBs takes a conversion step, and the base model nudges you toward paying extra to drop the ads. If you live in the Kindle store, this is an easy buy.
The bigger screen makes a real difference
Coming from the older Paperwhite, the 7-inch display is the upgrade I didn't know I needed — fewer page turns and text feels less cramped. Page turns are genuinely snappy now. I read in bed every night with the warm light at a low level and it's so much easier on the eyes than my phone.
Excellent reader, just wish it took EPUB directly
Battery lasts forever and I love reading by the pool without worrying about water. The only annoyance is the Amazon lock-in — I had to convert my DRM-free EPUBs with Calibre before sending them over. Once they're on, the experience is flawless. USB-C is a welcome change.
Paid extra to drop the ads, worth it
Got the no-ads version and it feels much cleaner — the lock screen shows book covers instead. Glare-free screen is brilliant in sunlight on my commute. It's not flashy, it just gets out of the way and lets you read, which is exactly what I wanted.

Amazon rates it at up to 12 weeks of battery life based on 30 minutes of reading per day with wireless off and the light at level 13. Real-world endurance depends on brightness and Wi-Fi use, but most readers go several weeks between charges. It charges over USB-C.
Yes. It carries an IPX8 rating, which means it can survive immersion in up to 2 meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes. That makes it safe for reading in the bath, by the pool, or at the beach. Salt water and chlorine should still be rinsed off afterward.
The Signature Edition doubles storage to 32 GB, adds Qi wireless charging, includes an auto-adjusting front light that responds to ambient brightness, and ships without lock-screen ads. The standard Paperwhite has 16 GB, manual brightness, and shows ads unless you pay to remove them.
Kindles do not open EPUB files directly. You can email documents to your device through Send to Kindle, which converts supported formats, and library books work via OverDrive/Libby in regions where that is available. For DRM-free EPUBs you typically convert them first with a tool like Calibre.
