The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max leads with stamina and novelty: a massive 7500 mAh battery, a genuinely useful 2.9-inch rear screen, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and IP68 sealing to 6 metres. The cameras are its weak point for a top flagship - the 5x periscope underwhelms and the ultrawide softens at the edges - and it's China-only at launch. But for battery life, performance and that clever second display, little else compares.
The battery and rear screen are next level
The 7500 mAh battery is unreal - I get nearly two days of normal use, something no other flagship manages. The rear screen sounds gimmicky but I genuinely use it to take selfies with the main camera and to glance at widgets. Performance from the 8 Elite Gen 5 is instant. Easily the most useful phone I've owned.
Brilliant phone, cameras are just good not great
Everything about the hardware feels top-tier - build, battery, screens, speakers, even IP68 to 6 metres. But for the price I expected more from the cameras; the 5x zoom is fine but not class-leading, and the ultrawide is soft at the edges. If the camera isn't your number one priority, it's fantastic.
Amazing, if you can actually buy one
Imported mine since it's China-only, and band support meant losing a couple of 5G bands here. Worth it for the battery and the dual screens though. HyperOS 3 needed the usual cleanup. The screen is gorgeous but I did notice it's not as blinding outdoors as the 3500-nit claim suggests.
